The majority of Surgeons currently performing minimal access surgery use a two-dimensional image. Achieving precision performance requires interpretation of monoscopic visual cues to appreciate depth within the operative field and may impair skill acquistion rates during the learning phase. My research investigates the role of current sterescopic visual systems in minimal access surgery and focuses on the ocular and cognitive processes that are effected when surgeons perceive a sense of stereopsis.
Primary Research Project fro Mr Andrew Day Lparoscopic Fellow 2009/2011
I am continuing the work of the unit in refining the enhanced recovery programme for laparoscopic colorectal surgery. I am coordinating a trial to investigate which is the most appropriate intravenous fluid and the correct modality of post-operative pain relief in laparoscopic colorectal surgery. In doing so we will provide information to determine the correct package of care for patients undergoing colorectal resection laparoscopically.
