About the MATTU

Created in 1995, the Minimal Access Therapy Training Unit was one of the three original centres in the UK to be awarded recognition and funding by the Government in conjunction with the Royal College of Surgeons and the Wolfson Foundation.

The Unit has strong international links with other centres of excellence such as the European Surgical Institute in Hamburg and IRCAD in Strasbourg, and regularly participates in joint courses via state of the art video conferencing.

With the support of Industry, the Unit takes an active role in the research and development of new surgical technologies and innovations. Its surgeons have also played a leading role in the development of new techniques; Guildford is, for example, one of the only centres in the world to be performing day case Nissen Fundoplications.

As the busiest specialist unit of its type in the UK, the MATTU is constantly expanding and in May 2005 relocated to larger premises in the University of Surrey's new Postgraduate Medical School, doubling MATTU's training capacity and providing a new, advanced training and lecture facility.
